Hunger lives
next door.

Food deserts aren't abstract statistics. They're the gap between a family's paycheck and the nearest grocery store. Enter your zip code to see what hunger looks like in your county.

// One Story

Hunger has a face.
So does the solution.

"87% of Humphreys County residents live in a food desert"

The Problem

Maria drove 22 miles to the nearest grocery store.

In Humphreys County, Mississippi — the most food-insecure county in America — Maria Tate worked two jobs and still couldn't reliably feed her three children. The corner store sold chips and soda. The nearest produce was a 45-minute drive she couldn't always afford.

The Turning Point

Then a church coordinator applied for a Harvest community garden grant.

Pastor Denise Williams at Shiloh Baptist had watched her congregation struggle for years. When she found Harvest's campaign toolkit, she organized 14 families, secured a half-acre lot, and within one growing season, had 340 pounds of fresh produce distributed to 28 households — including Maria's.

"47 families fed year-round from one community garden"

The Result

Maria's daughter Kezia now tends the tomato rows every Saturday.

Two years later, the Shiloh Community Garden feeds 47 families year-round. Kezia, 11, won her school's science fair with a project on soil composition. Maria hasn't driven 22 miles for vegetables in 18 months. This is what one campaign — one coordinator, one community — can do.

"
The garden didn't just grow food. It grew something in us we thought hunger had taken away.

— Pastor Denise Williams, Shiloh Baptist Church, Humphreys County, MS
